Scoliosis Pain Treatment in West Bloomfield, MI

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that affects between six and nine million Americans. Its first signs are a slight curve that worsens over time and is diagnosed when the spine bends more than 10 degrees to either side.

If left untreated, scoliosis can cause recurring injuries and sciatica, and the most severe cases can cause diminished lung and heart capacity, physical disability, and painful menstruation.

The good news is that if discovered early on, chiropractic care can prevent scoliosis from advancing.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is when the spine curves sideways, either in an S or C shape. The condition usually begins with a small bend caused by a misaligned vertebra, but if left untreated, the body will compensate for the curve by building musculature around the misaligned vertebrae. As muscle continues to build up, the spine’s curvature increases.

Scoliosis is diagnosed when an exam reveals a curve greater than 10 degrees. A significant curve is greater than 25 to 30 degrees, while a severe curve exceeds 45 to 50 degrees.

What Causes Scoliosis?

The cause of most cases of scoliosis is unknown, but contributing factors include postural issues, degenerative diseases, and traumatic accidents. Genetic and environmental issues are also believed to be risk factors.

Scoliosis usually begins in children aged 10 to 12, during rapid growth spurts, and is more common in girls than boys. It can also develop in older adults due to degenerative diseases.

Scoliosis Pain Treatmen

Because back pain often isn’t present with scoliosis, a physical exam is crucial. Other symptoms that can lead to a scoliosis diagnosis are uneven shoulders or a shoulder blade;

a rib or lower back hump when bending forward and backward; and one hip that is higher than the other.

Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis pain treatment includes chiropractic care to adjust the spine, which alleviates the body’s compensations for the curvature. Regular chiropractic care can reduce the severity of the curve and alleviate any pain. Braces can also help with pain relief and improved posture.
