What are Myofascial Trigger Points?

A myofascial trigger point is a highly irritable point in the fascia surrounding the skeletal muscle, which has not been caused by trauma. A trigger point can normally be identified by a palpable nodule or band in the muscle fibers. Pressing on the trigger point will result in twitching or pain which may radiate through the muscle concerned.

What are the Symptoms of Myofascial Pain?

You may have developed a myofascial trigger point if you have prolonged acute pain in a muscle. The pain will normally radiate out from a central point and may affect surrounding or connecting muscles over time. The source of the pain can be felt in the form of a hard mass or node, more commonly referred to as a muscle “knot.”

When myofascial trigger points are left untreated, they will spread, developing multiple points, and creating chronic and severe pain through the musculoskeletal system. Once fully developed this is condition is called myofascial pain syndrome (MPS)

What Is Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy?

Therapy for myofascial trigger points involves direct pressure, massage, and manipulation of the muscle mass that is contributing to the trigger point or knot. Finding the source of the trigger point is key to removing the pain. Therapy may start with direct pressure aimed to spread out the knot and alleviate the immediate pain. To remove the muscle knot, treatment will often conclude with softening of the muscle through deep massage. Movement, stretching exercises, and pressure instruments are also used in myofascial trigger point therapy.

Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy

Although it’s called a knot, the term muscle band may be more apt, as the trigger point is a tight band of contracted muscle mass, that will feel hard to touch, and may twitch or radiate pain.

The key to myofascial trigger point therapy is identifying the correct positions, pressure, and movements which will quickly alleviate pain, and un-tie the muscle mass, eventually restoring it to full health.
